Greetings from Breckenreid

Day number two has come to a close. My coworker from Winnipeg and transport Canada arrived this morning at 8:30. We had breakfast together and then spent the afternoon at the test facility going through test plans and paperwork for the testing to start tomorrow.

I found today to be quite a bit harder to stay awake. I think yesterday was an anomaly and now today I'm feeling the result of the 7 hrs time difference.

We went for dinner in Luzern again, this time to a Brauserie (German for brewery). I had two Bavarian sausages and a pretzel along with two beers. The meal wasn't bad but I wouldn't say it was worth the $40 that it cost... Oh well...

Had some interesting times yesterday. Jason (guy from Tucson) and I got to the test lab which is about 10 mins driving distance away from our hotel. To the one side you look up at houses built into the mountain side on some pretty serious slopes. Near the houses you can hear cow bells clanging away as the cows walk in the pasture. The clouds were low and created a neat effect with the mountain/hill top poking out through the top of the clouds.

After work, Jason and I went to Luzern for dinner, there really aren't many options in our little village of Breckenreid. We parked and attempted to pay about the machine wouldn't take my 5 Swiss franc coin. So, I proceeded to walk around trying to find somewhere to exchange for smaller coins. After 10 mins of searching, we finally went to the pub we were at the night before with one of my friends from university.

Once parking was paid for, we wandered around and stopped in one pub for a drink. We then went to the train station just to check it out and then went to another pub where the big action was the two teams of dart players.

After this, we attempted to find somewhere to eat but everything seemed to be closed or already shutdown and cleaned their grills. So, we went to Burger King...

I felt bad that we didn't get somewhere fancier as it was Jason's birthday yesterday... However he was quite content with Burger King, he misses America he said.

After Burger King we drove back to our hotel but had difficulties getting in at 12am. The hotel lobby was pitch black and the two entrances in the garage wouldn't accept Jason or my key card to open the door. However, when we went up to the street entrance door, it was unlocked. Figure that one out...

Well, I should get some sleep. Testing starts tomorrow at 8 am so we are meeting for breakfast at 7:30.

Here are some pictures from the last few days:

In Zurich

Well I made it safe and sound.  I'm in the Swiss Air Arrivals Lounge trying to type this on a weird keyboard where the y and z are switched.

Flight was good.  I had about a 2 hrs nap on the lie flat bed and got a bit of work done.  Now I'm waiting for Jason to arrive in 1 hour.

I have a feeling today will be a long day, I'm already ready for bed and it is just starting.  Hopefully we can get to our hotel and get checked in early.  I wouldn't mind a sleep and some wifi so I can see what my plan will be with Tom later today.

Have some pretty neat pictures to add to the blog but (again) I need some wifi so I can use my phone to upload them.

Well, Gwen has gone to bed and I'm continuing to have trouble with this keyboard.  Goodnight back home and good morning over here.

Traveling man

I write this post as I sit in the air Canada maple leaf lounge, I guess that is a benefit to flying business class on Swiss air.

Had a nice snack and a drink or two. Feeling pretty relaxed for my flight. Olivier was right, have a few drinks before the flight and you will sleep like a baby.

I just finished going through some details on the medevac project, was concerned it would make me anxious, stressed and mad but it didn't. Of the 16 dwgs we are behind on, only 3 are of concern. All of the others have legitimate reasons for being late (waiting for answers from the customer or initial certification concerns).

This should make my flight a lot more enjoyable and I will be able to get the little bit of work done that I need to and then relax.

So here is the plan:
Sunday - arrive in Zurich and wait 2 hrs for Jason (guys from Tucson) to arrive. I'll probably use the lounge there too to have breakfast and maybe a shower. Then we will drive together to Ennetburgen where our hotel is. From there, don't know maybe some sight seeing.

At 4 or so one of the guys I went to engineering with is going to try to meet us for a drink. Tom is working for an F1 racing team in Switzerland (team name is failing me right now).

Monday - meetings

Tuesday - meetings in the afternoon, work in the morning.

Wednesday and Thursday - testing

Friday - travel back.

Good thing I brought my camera and tripod, it looks pretty nice at the hotel.

Well, I should finish this drink and make my way to the gate. Miss you all (especially Gwen)!

Wednesday 24 April 2013

Let the travel continue

I used to think traveling for work was fun and neat. Well, perhaps that is wearing off...

I returned to Montreal today after one and a half days of meetings in Quebec City. I got home early, at 3 which was nice. Tomorrow I will leave bright and early to drive to Peterborough for an inspection. I will overnight there so that I can get some work done tomorrow.

Next week will have me in Switzerland for a meeting and testing for the medical project. I won't be alone, the Engineering manager from Tucson will be there (and is the one who requested my attendance) along with one guy from Transport Canada and at least one guy from our Winnipeg office (maybe two, not sure right now).

No plans made for next week yet but will do that soon. I'm trying to figure out how to get from Zurich to the test facility and I need to see when others are traveling to make the best arrangements.

Well I don't have much else to say other than I'm looking forward to traveling back home for good. Hopefully the snow will be gone by then...

Email titled "Damage from Tire Replacement at CTC 6700 Cote des Neiges"

Dear Mr. Lafleur,

I was given your contact information from one of the on-duty managers today.

I recently had my car serviced at your location - replacement of my winter tires with summer tires, not on rims.

I attempted to have this completed on Saturday 20 Apr 13. I called and was told if I brought my car in the shop could have this competed by 17:00. I brought in mu car and left it for the day. I received a phone call at about 15:30 from the shop asking where my lock nut adapter was located. I provided the answer (in my trunk with the spare tire). The mechanics looked but could not find it. I received a call about 30 mins later explaining this. I took your employees word as I did have my car serviced in November at the CTC on Sources and figured perhaps they forgot to replace my adapter.

I picked up my car at 16:30 and drove it back to my apartment. I decided to check for the adapter in my trunk. Within a minute I found it exactly where I told them - in with the spare tire.

I returned my car to the shop this morning (Sunday 21 Apr 13) at 10:00 and explained that I found the adapter in the trunk. The service coordinator was rather accommodating (I don't recall his name) and told me they would have the tires replaced today and that he would provide me with complimentary nitrogen. I thanked him for this.

I picked up my car at 15:30 (Facture 20040100012804). I drove my car straight home with no issues. Once home, I was unloading the tires from my trunk and passenger back seat and noticed that there is a deep scratch and dent on the rear passenger door panel. A photo is attached - I wiped some of the dust with my hand to see how deep the damage is. It clearly is through the paint.

It appears like this dent was caused from opening the door too far when the car was still in the lift. There are no other dents on the passenger side which would indicate this is damage caused from a vehicular incident.

I am very disappointed that this was not shown to me prior to leaving. I would expect that a service centre such as Canadian Tire would own up to mistakes which cause damage to a customer's vehicle. I trust you feel the same.

Please call me when you receive this email tomorrow so we can discuss next steps to have this damage repaired.

Thank-you,

Adam Coolidge

Let's play a game

Called "who can find the lock nut adapter".

Player 1 - Quebec Mechanic - hmm, let me think. It's probably in the trunk with the spare. (Rummages around, looking). Darn, I don't see it here.

Player 2 - shop boss - let's check the car. Perhaps it is in the glove box or armrest console. (Pulling out everything, searching). Geez, I don't see it either.

Player 3 - service coordinator - I got it, lets call the owner. (Dials phone). "Hello? Yes this is Canadian tire, we can't seem to find your lock nut adapter."

Adam - "oh, that's interesting. It should be in with the spare tire, below the floor at the back end near the bumper, with the jack."

Player 3 - "ok, we will check". Players 1-3 search again.

- 15 mins later -

Player 3 - (dials phone). "Hello, this Is Canadian tire again, we can't find the adapter. Do you want us to cut the lock nuts off?"

Adam - "no. Let me call the other shop who put the tires on to see if they have it."

Adam - calls the other Canadian tire, leaves a message for the shop manager to call him back on Sunday when he is in to see if he has the adapter. Adam then calls the current Canadian tire to say he will pick up the adapter. Adam takes the metro, walks to the store and gets his car. He checks to make sure that all the tires are in the car. They are.

Adam drive back to the apartment, fuming the whole way that his winter tires are still on the car. "I wonder where the adapter could be?" He thinks to himself. (Maybe spoken out loud). "There better be an adapter, if the tires are straight lugs I'm not going to be happy. Come on, they wouldn't have called if the tires weren't secured with a lock nut. I hope..."

At the apartment Adam decides to look and see if the tires do have lock nuts. He empties the trunk of the tires and removes the spare. He looks, no lock nut visible. He removes the tire jack and the black bag that contains the coiled "wire" that is used to remove the lug nut covers, a screw driver and tire wrench.

But wait, what does he feel in the upper pouch of the bag. THE ADAPTER!

And this is why I prefer to do my own car maintenance. At least I know when I'm not competent to perform a task or if I have the proper tools...

I guess I will try take two tomorrow. Let's try Costco who doesn't do appointments. I'll make sure to get there 30 mins before they open so I can get in first thing.

Adam is still shaking his head.

Time well spent ...

Well as I write this I am going back to get my cars which still Have my winter tires on. Why you might ask? Because when I got my winter tires installed in November the Canadian tire that I went to graciously decided to keep my adapter for the lock nuts.

Now I am waiting for a call from the shop manager at the other can tire to call me back tomorrow and tell me if they have the adapter. They better.

Then I get to take my car back to can tire maybe on Monday to get the tires replaced. I will probably change this to thurs or fri as Monday will be crazy with me leaving for Quebec City.

I just love when a plan comes together...

Other than this I was having an ok afternoon. I got the work done that I wanted and was watching the jets game.

No the real question is - do I take the tires out of my trunk...

T-minus 4 weeks

It has been a busy and productive morning so far. I got up at 8:45 the sun was shinning in through my window.

I started with taking out the garbage and recycling. After a week of guests it was pretty full. I then started my laundry and took my tires down to my car so I can get them changed over and ship them back home.

I had to make several calls to find somewhere to get my car in to have the tires changed. It turns out that I could take my car to the Canadian tire about 2 miles from the apartment.

I dropped the car off, walked to the metro and made my way home. Laundry was complete so finished that and then made some lunch - tuna melts.

Now, I'm slowly coming out of my food coma and should get some work done. We have meetings in Quebec City on Tuesday and Wednesday this week which I need to make a presentation for. This should only be an hour or two. I also need to enter my time cards for this past week. Other than that, the laptop is going back in my bag and will not come out until Monday at work.

I guess I should get cracking on this so that I can finish before the jets game at 3 pm my time.

There will probably be another blog post today...

All alone again

Well, my guests have all left and (should be) onboard their flight back to Winnipeg.

We had a good weekend with Eric and Jamie.  Things started on Friday when Gwen arrived at 11pm or so. I finished laundry (waiting for the dryer to finish when I left) and then bed time.

Saturday, we slept in until about 10am.  We got up and started cleaning the apartment because I didn't have a chance last week with two "social events" Thursday and Friday evenings.  We finished by noon and then went to pick up Eric and Jamie from the airport.

Once picked up, we started our adventures with lunch at Schwartz's - smoked meat.  Then, dessert at Fairmount Bagel before returning to the apartment to drop off bags and the car.  Next, we went downtown on the metro to show off the sights and sounds of Old Montreal.

We went to the Habs Hall of Fame and spent about an hour and half there.  Then, we went to 3 Brasseurs for some beer and tea and soda.  Everyone laughed at my litre of beer.  I wasn't laughing, was rather full after I finished it though.

After 3 Brasseurs, we made our way back to the metro to go to dinner at Le Saint Bock - another pub.  The food was really good - I still don't know what I had but it was like a tortilla shell filled with pieces of chicken and cooked vegetables.  Another beer while we watched the Habs get owned by the Leafs.

Once complete, we made our way back to the metro for the third stop on our pub crawl - Hurley's Irish Pub.  The place was packed except for this one small, dark room with candles.  I figured this was fine so we jammed into the room and drank our last beer (well, Eric and I did) and then made our way back to Chez Adam.

Sunday was a relatively relaxing day.  We started with lunch downtown at La Cage Aux Sports followed by Maple Delights for dessert - I got a maple latte, Gwen with her maple tea and Eric and Jamie bought some cookies.  We then went to Marche Bonsecours where they were having their spring fashion sale.  Gwen was EXCITED!  The girls bought jackets for $50 (down from $150) - the guys stood there and looked pretty.

We then made our way to Olympic Stadium and wandered around there for a bit.  Afterwards, we went back to the apartment for a siesta and then off to dinner at a Mediterranean restaurant called Elounda, close to where I work.  The ladies ate two lobsters and Eric and I shared an American Red Snapper.  It was delicious.

After dinner, I gave my romance tour.  We took a drive through a residential area where the single family homes were HUGE.  Gwen looked up a few homes on her phone while we drove around - in the multiple millions of $$'s and at least 3,000 sq ft of living space.  These homes were gorgeous.

We left the residential area and I showed Eric and Jamie where I work and the different plants of Bombardier.  We then drove to the look out on Mont Royal to see the city lights at night (and the raccoons out in full force).

Monday I had to work while everyone else went and did some shopping downtown.  In the evening, we made supper at the apartment (salad, boiled potatoes and lemon-dill chicken, mmm) and watched the Habs vs Flyers while we played a game of Settlers of Catan (a board game).

Tuesday, again I had to work.  Everyone else went to Biodome to see the animals.  Supper we went to Le Biftheque for a disappointing dinner - my steak was over cooked, Eric's lamb chops were under cooked and Gwen's filet mignon was under cooked.  I'm usually quite impressed with this restuarant, I don't know what was different today.

I dropped everyone off at the airport at about 8pm and then made my way back to the apartment to enter bills and listen to the Jet's game before doing some over-due blogging.

4 weeks to go, definitely on the home stretch now.

En route

Writing on my 4 hr flight from Houston to Montreal

Are we there yet? It's been a long day, started with 4 back to back (to back to back) teleconferences. Oh, I used this saying already, well I think it is still humorous.

Luckily I was only mildly frustrated at the outcome of one where we are still arguing or debating over our release schedule for drawings. As it has been explained to me, we are a service company that thrives on on time delivery and customer delight. As unrealistic as our customers may be, we need to try to meet their expectations, if we cannot we need to be justified with why we can't. I'm not the design manager or have any experience in building a release schedule which should be something that is handled by the design leads. I don't get why the electrical design lead can figure this out and work to his schedule but mechanical cannot. And who has to face the customer and explain why we can't meet dates, me...

Anyways, I digress. I have had a pretty decent day today. After the 2.5 hrs of meetings this morning, I stepped onto the flight from Tucson to Houston at 10am. Flight was routine but a little delayed as we were over weight so had to get some volunteers to take a different flight. Too bad i have to work tomorrow, that $500 credit would have been nice.

Got into Houston at 2:30 cst. Went for lunch with two guys from bombardier Who are on this flight as well. Nothing fancy, we had 30 mins so just grabbed a sandwich from the sandwich artists.

This flight boarded at 4, same time as departure so we were a bit delayed. The lady working the counter explained that the pilot didn't want us on the plane while they were fuelling. Immediately me and one of the guys from bombardier know this is an excuse. They refuel planes all the time with people on it. There is going to be more to this we figure.

Well, onboard our suspicions turn true. The pilot comes on the pa once everyone is on the plane (side note - open seat beside me, awesome!). It turns out that one of the fuel transfer valves in the wing that allows you to pump fuel into the plane and automatically balance/level the fuel in the two wings, where the fuel is stored, isn't working properly.

Now it makes more sense. They were probably troubleshooting this and didn't
Want to alarm passengers. This isn't a problem so if this happens to you, don't worry. Instead, they had to fuel up the old fashioned way by manually fuelling each wing. Don't worry, no dipstick measuring approach like the Gimli glider, we are about 30 mins out of Montreal, started our initial descent so we will make it.

I was hoping to get some groceries when I got to the apartment but I'm not sure I will be able to if we get in at 9:45. By the time I clear customs, get my bag and catch a cab I'm sure the store will be closed. Don't know what I'm going to do for breakfast tomorrow then, maybe I will grab a bagel in the morning before I leave. Not looking forward to the early morning either, a three hour time difference is a lot to catch up from in 8 hrs.

I'm curious what is growing in my fridge. I think I cleared most things out but I think there was milk and maybe some cheese. Not sure about veggies but there were probably some there three weeks ago. Now, .... Yum.... I also wonder what the plants will look like. I know I watered them before I left but again that was three weeks ago. I was doing so good, watering them about once a week, sometimes twice or more.

Other things I need to do before company arrive:
- get groceries. I have lots of beer so that's not an issue
- sweep my floors
- wash my car, if it is still there. I fear it may have rusted away as there was some, not much, salt on it.
- change tires, maybe. It is supposed to snow Friday so maybe I will hold off for a little bit longer.

Well, only 15 mins longer. Time to turn off the iPad.

Ciao

Last day in the sun

Well, returning to Montreal tomorrow. It's going to be a long day again, starting at 7am with back to back to back to back teleconferences. Then, travel from Tucson to Houston to Montreal for the better part of 8 hrs.

Today's weather was cool. I guess I've been down here too long. 64 this evening and I had to wear my hoodie and pants...

Don't really have much to say, I'm pretty tired tonight. Went for dinner last night with people from work and got home at 10:30. Was up early because I couldn't sleep. At work at 7:15 leaving at 5:45. I'm all packed up and have my clothes set aside for tomorrow just like my baseball gear when I was 6.

I'm looking forward to the weekend where Gwen will be in Montreal along with our friends Eric and Jamie. Better get caught up on my sleep now I guess...

Goodnight

At the movies

At the movie theatre because I can't think of anything else to do to kill time. Went to the zoo had an ok time. I'm pretty lonely today and have to kill the entire day until our business unit director flies into Phoenix at 9:30 tonight otherwise I would have gone back to Tucson an hour ago (writing this at 5:15). Instead we will drive down together and I can tell I will be tired tomorrow, I didn't have a good sleep last night, don't know why.

The theatre is nice, they have flip up armrests, Gwen would like this so then She could get more comfortable during the movie, even easier to fall asleep ;)

Tix was $10 and small popcorn and large water was $10.25... Go figure lol.

Well movie is starting, gotta put my phone away.

Coyotes vs Avalanche

What an experience. Going to a hockey game when you are wearing shorts is a new experience for me. Also new was not paying for parking, getting free shwag (a hat) and a 24 oz beer.

The arena is pretty big. I think I got in at the wrong corner and as I write this in my awesome seat, I don't really know how to get out of here and to my car. Oh well, I'll just look for the large open air mall outside and I'll know from there.

I find it strange how Phoenix has Howerchuk, Steen and Hulls numbers in the rafters. These guys never played for Phoenix how can they have any sentiment for these guys? Lol, whatever, I guess they bought the history with the team. NOT!

I got quite a few strange looks today in my jersey. But then I saw a guy in a Boston jersey, at least I have a connection to the coyotes.

My seat is seat 1 row H. A is at the glass and works up from there. I'm gonna have to pay attention to pucks getting dumped in, I'm at that level where deflections will cause a nose bleed, or concussion.

It's not the same feel as jets games, not as much energy except for the rediculously loud music at warm up. I must be getting old...

Speaking of old, this lady in short shorts, pink tank top and high heals must be in her 40's and is trying to distract the players, lol. Cougar...

5:40 pm just spotted another jets fan. GO (1996) JETS GO.

5:47 pm howler the coyotes mascot just came out to "who let the dogs out". Wow (or should I say woof)

5:52 pm saw someone wearing mitts. It's not that cold in here. I'm in shorts and sandals.

18:14 (gametime GT) coyotes score! 1-0

6:19 pm stop in play - cleaning the ice wow can they not skate

9:03 gt just saw someone on the jumbo tron with a real coyote head hat. Sweet

4:01 gt stop in play. I think they have giveaway nights each game to the first 10,000 fans. Next game - free pizza

6:52pm just high fived a jets fan

On my way back to my seat I saw a guy with a sliced green apple drizzled with caramel sauce and two (what looked like) strawberry kabobs with chocolate. What do we have in Winnipeg - perogies. To each their own...

6:57 pm just saw Tkachuk and Numminen's numbers in the rafters along with roenicks.

16:54 gt coyotes score on the power play with a 2 on 0. Score 2-0 coyotes

15:33 gt there's gonna be a fight soon its getting chippy

13:46 gt stop in play. Good jets q and eh - who should play you in a movie? Best coyote answer was Denzel Washington an this player was white. Lol

12:56 gt coyotes goal from almost behind the goal line. That's an Adam goal ;)

5:23 gt - goal by the last remaining jet on the coyotes Shane Doan. 4-0
Coyotes!

2nd intermission - they are cleaning the ice and have a girl riding on the Zamboni maybe 12 yrs old. No helmet unlike back he. Also, she is just siding sideways legs hanging over the edge of the Zamboni. What a difference Medicare makes with respect to safety equipment...

7:50 pm I'm seeing a lot of coyotes blankets in use... Again, jets merch idea... But I guess we don't go to games in shorts or sundresses ...

Time unknown (forgot to look at a clock) made friends in the bathroom. Some guy was complimenting us on having the loudest rink in the NHL. He was wearing a jets jersey. He also commented that we are the best because we also have dancing Gabe.

1:00 gt last minute of play!

Coyotes win!

Now time to walk back to my car in the 75*F heat.

8:37pm just saw a truck from Saskatchewan

Phoenix

I made it safe and sound to Phoenix. Left Tucson at 10:30 after I switched my Jetta for 2012 Fusion with cruise control (necessary for a 2 hr drive) and a quick run. I grabbed breakfast at the hotel, loaded up my car and drove to the Deserrt Botanical Garden in Phoenix.

It was really neat, I hope to upload photos soon. There were lots of cactus that were blooming.

Weather is nice, 90*F and sunny. Here are some photos from the drive:

Leaving Tucson

On I-10 going to Phoenix not too busy

I liked the mountains and thought might as well get the road sign in there too

I thought I started in Arizona, don't know why this sign was there...

Can you see all those lanes on the GPS? Crazy

Driving through Glendale on I-17

Well, I should shower and get ready for the hockey game. Hope you are all doing well back home.

Tuesday 2 April 2013

One of these things just doesn't belong...

Deep

Delayed post from yesterday:

It’s clear and sunny on the flight to Denver right now. I’m strangely hungry, I ate a salad at TGI Fridays but I guess that wasn’t enough substance after the copious amounts of ham, meat balls, turkey and other food from the Easter festivities this weekend.

I had a great time this weekend, much more so than my birthday weekend. I’m still upset about that – that weekend started off “great” (rolling eyes) as major project issues came to head on Thursday late in the day as I was driving home… It continued to progress to another (separate) project issue that came up Friday followed by roughly 4 hrs of work on Saturday and Sunday (with one trip to the office on Sunday) to try and bring a project (which I was told was under control) back to something manageable on Monday morning. Anyways, enough about that – all is done, water under the bridge as they say.

I am certainly ready to return home for good. I am very tired of dealing with people by phone and email. I am learning my capabilities to manage projects from a distance – it is much easier to do so when you can sit down with the person/people for 5-10 mins and go through in detail what is needed. Talking over the phone doesn’t have the same effect.

Throughout the course of my 6 months away from home, I have come to appreciate a lot of things along with learning things about myself:

I like my space – apartment living is not for me. As much as shoveling and cutting grass is “not fun”, there is something about having space that you can call your own that makes it ok.

I don’t like being by myself. I know, weird when I can be so quiet – but spending an hour FaceTiming Gwen everyday isn’t the same as being able to talk (or just listen) as we make dinner, do laundry, shovel, etc. I truly underestimated this fact going into this adventure.

Combined with number 2, when there is no one (or nothing) to occupy my time, I tend to be consumed by work. I need to draw better lines between “work time” and “personal time”. It’s too easy to say “hmm, nothing to do, might as well read email” or “work on this report” or whatever might need to be done.
The philosophy in Montreal (at work) is very much “production, production, production” whereas other modification centres (such as Tucson) it has a more relaxed or realistic feel. I guess I feel I have better control over the destiny of the projects there than in Montreal where it is very much “here is what we want and better get”.

I have difficulty delegating. Big surprise, I knew this already. However, I have learned why this is – I expect people to be autonomous like myself, to be able to act with little direction provided, search out potential solutions and then talk to the proper people to validate if those solutions are viable. I guess I need to learn how to delegate better – provide guidance and training and check in more often.

I guess it is all part of the experience of working away from home. You get to experience new things and learn about yourself in the mean time.

Well, time to iron some pants for work tomorrow. Hope to blog again soon.
