Florida 2022 - Day 1

Well the long awaited trip that was cancelled in 2020 because of COVID, finally got to happen. MB Mell and Lola have been planning this for over 2 years and very excited to finally be travelling again.

AA and Lola left at 5 am this morning to catch their flight to Orlando, through Toronto.  The flights were pretty uneventful. Slept most of the way to Toronto, ate breakfast during the layover and made it to Orlando without delay or issues.

way too early....

Lola was pretty excited to see a certain Tail number on a plane in Toronto.  It used to be on an Air Canada plane, but AA explained that they reuse numbers when planes go out of service. Now they know what Westjet plane to look for :).

We had wifi on the plane so as we were flying over the coast, we texted to see if our friends could see us. We are pretty sure we flew over them near Daytona Beach ;)

Once we arrived in Orlando, we got our bags and headed into a Lyft to get to our resort hotel, at Universal Studios. The wait was long to check in, but we got our rooms a little early, put our bags in the room and headed out for a snack.   We have 5 beds for the 6 of us... no one wants to sleep alone, so there are 2 empty beds currently.

AA still not sure where we are going?

While we waited for our friends to arrive (who drove), AA and Lola headed to City Walk from their hotel. It was a short 15 minute walk along the canal along the Garden. Once they went through security, they headed to find a snack. AA was pretty excited for a Chicago Hotdog, and Lola had some fries and sweet tea!  The snack was good.  After the snack we walked around a little and then headed back to our hotel. We knew we still had about 1 hour to wait till our friends arrived so we headed to the pool.

They not only gave you towels to use by the pool, but also gave chair covers.  The water was warm in the pool, but Lola kept getting splashed by the kids, so they headed to lounge by the pool to get some sun.  It was sure warm.

Our friends finally arrived just after 5 pm. We greeted them in the lobby, not sure who was more excited to see who. They came from the beach, so showers and clothes were the next step once we got to the hotel.  B and T sure had a lot of stories already to tell Lola as she tried to get them ready to go for supper.

Matching Sandal Bunch!

We had a great supper at Amatista in our hotel.  Our waitress was so friendly and wanted to take T home, as he was so polite and cute ordering his meal.

After dinner which we all enjoyed, we headed to Whole foods to get some breakfast food. The traffic was sure backed up, and it took us so long to get there.  Stocked up with food and drink, we headed to CVS for a few things, and then back to the hotel.  Oh.....forgot to mention the debacle with the key card.  We tried to exit the parkade (or parking garage as it is called here).  He asked us which key card when we checked in to put the parking on, but obviously didn't work.  We were holding up the line to get out of the parking garage for a very long time, we felt bad but there was nothing we could do but wait for someone to answer the call.  Lola got that fixed up for the next time.

First time in a grocery store in over 2 year....

Back at the hotel, the Twinkie's went to bed, and the adults discussed plans for the next day.  AA and Lola has been up for a long time today, so early bed time for all of us.

We are all worried about our parents back home with the dead horse creek flooding its banks today, and more water on the way. But hopefully the rain is less intense and the water retreads. Thinking of them during this tough time.

Tomorrow we head to Island of Adventure and Universal Studios.

Night, Lola.

Spring Break 2022 - Alberta Day 7

Today was the last day of our vacation.  It was an earlier morning as we said good bye to our travel companions as they started their journey back to Manitoba.

AA and Lola made the most of their time before their flight at 5pm from Edmonton by driving to Medicine Lake and then on to Maligne Lake for some spectacular mountain views.  At one stretch of road by the Maligne River, they found a young female moose grazing on some lichen (or otherwise just some tree branches).

Medicine Lake

At Maligne Lake, some red Parks Canada chairs were found, after AA proceeded to sink up to his knees in snow a couple times.  It was quite amazing to not hear anything (no animals or people) and even the wind was pretty quiet - so peaceful!

After some short sightseeing, it was time to start the drive to the airport.  The plan was to find a rest stop in the Park to eat a picnic lunch but each time they found a spot on the map, they somehow proceeded to drive by the stop.  So, instead they pulled over just outside the main Park gate and ate lunch in the car.

Unfortunately, the objects were getting further away...

The drive to the airport was relatively uneventful.  Lola was starting to stress about whether there was going to be enough time to get something to eat at the airport as AA timed the drive almost perfectly to get them to check in their baggage at 1.5 hrs before their flight.  In the end, there was enough time to get bags checked in, through security and get something to eat before departure.  Lola was happy.

The flight back was through Saskatoon - a short 1 hr flight and 45 mins layover and then onto another 1.25 hr flight to Winnipeg.  The Saskatoon airport was pretty quiet with only three more flights to depart today.  The flights were routine and we are now at home, getting ready to sleep in our own bed.

It was a great vacation after such a long time of staying home.  It was especially nice to be able to share some good experiences with friends.  Of course, we are now looking forward to our next adventures and can't wait for camping reservations to open up this week.
