Germany 2019 - Day 8

Today is a travel day.

We started this morning with breakfast at the hotel, then headed to get our car that was in the parking garage for almost over 3 days since we used public transportation.  Headed off to the airport about a 30 minute drive.  As we got closer to the airport it was sure foggy again, just like when we arrived in Munich.  AA says "not the best place for an airport if it is always foggy".

Arriving at the airport, we dropped the car off with no issues, and headed to the airport terminal.  No other issues, security was long, but moving, and the passport verification didn't work through the automation, so we had to wait for another line, but no problems. Don't worry there was a smoking room right out our gate.

We knew the flight was full and that someone was going to sit in our row with us.  AA was worried it was going to be a big burly man, but to our surprise it was a 12 year old girl, traveling alone from Germany all the way to Victoria, through Toronto and Vancouver.  First thing she did was ask AA to help her put her bag up, as she was not tall enough.  We were amazed with her confidence.  She also drank 4 coffees and 2 glasses of coke on the flight, and was so into all the movie and games she played.  She had comforting stuffy and pillow to help her through the journey.

The flight was 8 hours and 5 minutes in the air.  Lola watched movies and TV, went to the washroom twice and had a good nap (photos by AA). Too bad she had a window seat without the window...

Arriving in Toronto, we had no issues going through  customs, and had to clear security again, as we went where there was Nexus Line.  Lola wasn't happy that she had to drink all her water and get through security again, but survived.

She was very hungry so first stop once through security was food.  We both had curry from Mill Street, AA having a beer, and Lola drinking free water!

We arrived at our gate, and find it is delayed.... and delayed.... then change of gate and plane.  Now we are scheduled to leave 2 hours later, and on a bigger plane.  Good thing there was a 9 week old puppy to keep us a little entertained, and some starbucks!

The trip was great, but can't wait to sleep in our own bed, when we get home!

Germany 2019 - Day 7

Our last full day here in Germany, and we thought we would take it a little easier, only visiting 3 of the cards Lola collected.  They never completed 3 of the cards, one being outside the "zone" they purchased on the Public Transit, the other were animal related, zoo and sea world, which weren't highly recommended, but options if we needed something to do.

Breakfast was eaten at the hotel before heading to the Train station to go to Karlsplatz, where in the winter there is an outdoor rink.  We arrived a little early.  There is also a large shopping strip here all the way to Marienplatz. 

We walked along checking out the shops, picking up a few things on our way. Along the way we saw some interesting shops, statues and buildings.

Once we got a few things, we headed back onto the subway to Olympiapark.  But first we headed to the BMW Museum and Welt.  Lola's Boss has a BMW so she tried to take some notes to share with him.  The museum was pretty cool, with almost 100 years of passion that goes into these premium vehicles.  The displays were really neat, and lots of cool cars, engines (including a plane engine).  Lola's favorite car was the orange one that had photos of people enjoying their car.  She feels like we don't photograph our lives with our cars as much as they used to in the old days... but maybe that is because she doesn't want anyone posing on the hood of her car....

After the museum we headed to the Welt.  Which is a huge show room, with cars (BMW, Mini's and Rolls-Royce).  It also had 3 restaurants, gift shop and don't forget the delivery area, where you drive down a ramp and out a fancy door right onto the street.  We saw someone taking their white convertible home today.

We headed to Olympic park just across the highway on a pedestrian bridge.  We found a some food and headed to eat the food near the large pond.  Sausage with Fries was so good.  Lola decided that grilled sausage is her preference over the "boiled".  The Olympic park and buildings were built for the 1972 Olympics 4 years before the Montreal Olympics.  there are a lot of similarities, including the olympic village the the Architecture style of the structures.  The tower of course is very different.

After lunch was eaten Lola and AA headed up the tower!  It is 291m tall tower, and we got to go up to 192m height.  The view was pretty cool, and very neat to see all the buildings from such a height that we saw from the ground.  It is amazing how big the BMW factory right in the city.  We could also see the alps in the far distance, but a little too sunny and cloudy in the distance to get a true view.

Back down the elevator that went 7m/second, which was very fast, and plugged our ears all the way down.

We took the subway to the Maximillianeum which is part of the parliament offices now. It is a large building that Lola spotted from the Old Peter Tower.  We strolled through the park to get there, and also strolled through more of the park before heading to a look out point.  It wasn't as impressive as we thought it would be, but a cool monument along the water.  After that we walked to the next subway station. We felt like this was a very fancy area of the city.  AA also noticed a lot of the children were speaking english, so maybe there was an english school in the area.

Once at the station, we headed back to the hotel.  Lola was pretty excited when she noticed that the escalators going to some of the smaller stations worked either way.  When you put the weight on the top or bottom, it triggered the direction as long as someone wasn't already riding on it.  She used this opportunity to use it since the station was pretty dead, it even had a "short train" with only a few cars when we got on.

AA had a call to take for work, so Lola caught up on social media, and really just enjoyed putting her feet up.  AA's call went over time, and we were a little late for our reservation at a very traditional family owned german restaurant,  Zum Brunnstien, a few blocks from our hotel, but luckily they still had our table as there was no where else to sit when we arrived.  The food was very good, and wow did Lola get a lot of shrimp and Salt potatoes.  AA ordered the Munich Schnitzel.  We finished it all up and it was only 31.40 Euro.

Lola's adventure was next to head to the giant ferris wheel she could see out the hotel window. They got there the long way, walking around the construction site, and arrived at the giant wheel.  It is the worlds largest transportable Giant Wheel.   The components fit into about 76 shipping containers.  It was about a 30 minutes ride.  The wheel will be in its location for 2 years.  The wheel is 74m in diameter.  The views were pretty cool, and it sure interesting to see Munich at night.  Not a lot of high rise buildings with all their lights on like most major cities, as well as not a lot of the church towers were lite up, except for you could clearly see Marienplatz.

Back on the ground, we walked back to the hotel with 2 events.  Event 1, AA purchased 2 beers for 4 decent size beers for 4 Euros at a convenience store in the subway station.  Event 2, as we got out of the station, we were surprised to see hundreds of bikes in a "parade" like with police escort.  Bikes were souped up with large speakers, blaring music, and people just riding in a large group.  Some bikes had yellow flags that said "Critical Mass Munich". 

AA did more work back at the hotel, while Lola repacked her bag, and charged all the devices she could to get ready for the long flight tomorrow.

The weather today was warmer than the 16 degrees.  It was a beautiful last day.

Lola is dreading the trip home tomorrow, especially because we have someone sitting in the Aisle in our row, so she can't spread out and sleep.  But maybe she isn't supposed to sleep, we have to figure this out to try and not be too Jet Lagged.

Ps, as Lola Finishes up the blog AA says "uh oh..."  We were only an hour away from the Audi Museum.... hopefully his work brings him back and Lola can come back too.
