BANG Explores Newfoundland - Day 6

Today we got up had breakfast at the hotel (B and N about an hour before AA and Lola).  Lola was disappointed as all the boiled eggs were gone, and she was looking forward to them.  I guess that means she has to get up earlier tomorrow!

After breakfast, we headed on a little tour of Gander, starting with driving to the airport to see where the planes landed on 9/11.  Then a short drive over to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. The museum was small but has a great history of Gander's role in developing the transatlantic flight. Gander once had the world's largest airport in the 1930's.  It also displayed Ganders role in the unexpected role of the aftermath of 9/11. They had 4 planes on display outside, one inside, and the cockpit and tail of another attached to the building.  The Lockheed Hudson MkIII was one of 7 intact airframes worldwide and the only one left in the Americas.  The highlight for Lola was the development of the town, once they decided to create a community other than army barracks.  They designed the community to look like a Gander (male goose). It was quaint but very informative, and gave you a good sense of the aviation town.

Next we went back to the hotel to get B some shorts, as he listened to the ladies about the temperature. (too warm for jeans when it is over 20 degrees).  We also stopped for Tim's to get us to our next destination, Twillingate.

We got there in about 1.5 hours to find a nice little restaurant on the water for lunch.  Annie's Harbour Restaurant did not disappoint.  Each of us having something we haven't had on the island yet.  B had his first Moose burger, Aa and N shared Moose Poutine and a bowl of Pea soup, and Lola had Scallops and Shrimp.  We were all very satisfied with our choices.

Then up to the road to Long Point Lighthouse.  We saw the lighthouse, hiked and enjoyed the views.  We were a little disappointed and unsure of the trails in the area, as well as lack of information as you got to destinations, but the views of the cliffs, and ocean were great.  We only saw 2 icebergs far in the distance and no puffins yet.

After our hiking, we headed back down the road to the town of Twillingate to take some scenic photos.

We then headed to the Prime Berth Captain Dave Museum.  We saw it on our way, and it had huge skeleton of two Sei Whales, the Internet said it was open till 6, but when we arrived it was closed.  So onto our next destination.... recommended from a family that we ran into many times near Gros Morne, Sansome's Dockside Dining (Doyle W Sansome & Sons Ltd, Hillgrade).  They had lobsters in a pool, and a beautiful view of the water.  B and Lola had fresh whole lobster, while AA and N had Lobster Salad on a Kaiser Bun, and potato salad (that had peas, carrots and corn in it).  The food was great.

He tried the Newfoundland Iced tea..... it was a lot of different liquids..

The plate had instructions on how to eat, but B still asked for instructions from Lola

The view from the deck where we ate was wonderful, and so was the temperature!

The lobster pool!

We headed back to Gander, just over an hour drive.  We stopped for gas, and an impromptu ice cream run.  There was even lactose free ice cream for Lola.  B was adventurous and had a banana split... he has never had one before, and didn't realise how large it would be.... took him 20 minutes, but he finished.

The lupins in full bloom!

Back at the hotel, to discuss plans for the next couple of days, and snacks. On our way to St John's tomorrow.

Lola.
