BANG Explores Newfoundland - Day 5

After another night at Gros Morne Cabins in Rocky Harbour, we got an early start on the day drive back towards Sally's Cove to Western Brook Pond for a 3 km hike to a boat tour of the pond.

The hike was as described - gentle hills and nice wide paths.  Once at the pond, we paid for our tickets and then waited 30 mins for the first boat departure at 10am.  The views along the tour were spectacular:

Some interesting facts from the tour:

  • Gros Morne National Park does not get as much snow as you would think - less snow than Barrie Ontario.
  • The highest cliff in the pond is approximately 650m / 2200ft high, over 100m taller than the CN tower - straight up from the water.
  • The pond is 16 kms long and at its deepest point 165m / 540 ft deep.
  • The water temperature at the surface of the pond was approximately 17*C; 30 ft below the surface the temperature is 5*C.
At the end of the pond, as we were turning the boat around to stop at the small dock and drop off the back-country hikers, we were treated to a bull moose who decided to wade into the water and have a quick bath:

The boat docked back at the "harbour" at noon and we made our 3kms walk back to the car.

At the car, we had a quick snack while we drove the 1 hr 20 mins to Deer Lake for lunch at Jungle Jims - AA has been craving the taco salad he saw on the menu when they were there the first time but didn't order it.

After everyone's bellies were full, the Equinox made a "quick" pitstop at Tim Hortons to get coffee (and a tea), the trek to Gander had begun.  AA and N each had a nap, Lola navigated and B drove.  The views were scenic with hills and mountains and lots of trees.

One pitstop was made in Grand Falls - Windsor and the car arrived in Gander shortly before 7pm.  Supper was at Lilly's Landing where more seafood was consumed before AA and Lola went to the nearby grocery store to get some drinks (and AA to get some beer at the attached liquor store).

Now, we are relaxing after a long travel day before getting some zzz's so we can do some exploring in Central Newfoundland tomorrow.
