BANG Explores Newfoundland - Day 4

We have arrived back at Rocky Harbour after a full day of exploring like the vikings and driving.... (Lola was the driver today!)

We began our day by driving the 9km to L'anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site to walk where the vikings did.  Lola had been here as a child with her parents and sisters, but remembered it being much bigger, I guess she was much smaller.  On our way out to walk to the village from the visitors centre, there were a bunch of people gathered just out the door looking through binoculars.  They were all speaking french so we couldn't quite figure out what they were looking at.  Once leaving, we finally saw the moose and calf up on the hill relaxing.

Lola shouldn't be blogging today as she didn't read and absorb a lot of the information that was posted around the site, but made sure to be the tour guide, reading off the map as we went through the archaeological site.  Here is the Wikipedia site if you need more information :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%27Anse_aux_Meadows

The experienced tour guide - "I remember this place being a lot bigger"

Once looking at the sod buildings we took the hike around the site to take in the views and of course find the red chairs!  The hike was 2km, with rather flat terrain, so enjoyable and easy for all.  We enjoyed the ocean views, looking for puffins and whales (no such luck yet), and wondering which islands are what, thankfully N found Lola a map in the visitors centre!

After the walk, we headed to Norstead.  There we had lunch near the water at Norseman Restaurant.  Lola was excited to order Snow Crab Legs and Salad, while the others had a brisket and shrimp sandwich.  B almost had to leave as we got the last table in this small place, and the other tables were filled with a group of people on an RV tour (and they were loud, and generated a lot of heat).  Once they left, his mood improved greatly!

We visited Leif Erikson statue on our way to the Norstead, where they prortray to be like the vikings.  There is also a boat there (the Snorri) which they sailed from Greenland to Newfoundland in 87 days in 1998.  They also had sod homes, and people dressed up pretending to be vikings 1000 years ago.  AA and B even tasted the home cooked bread, B with molasses while AA had some berry jam.

We left there to start our journey back to Gros Morne area.   It was about a 4.5 hour drive, but took us about 6.5 hours with all the stops.  NAD all seemed to have their eyes closed for a portion of the drive that we had done the day before, but once venturing onto new territory, they all woke up to take in the views.  First stop was just past Flower Cove to see the Thromolites.  These critically endangered microbial structures resemble the earliest forms of life on earth.  The formations can only be seen in 2 places in the world, one being here in Newfoundland, while the other in Australia. We hiked about 30 minutes round trip.  The formations were very cool, and a change in a life time to see them I am sure.

Continuing our drive down the westerly coast line (the 430) we headed to Port au Choix for a few groceries (for breakfast) and then supper.  We got to the restaurant, Sea Echo Hotel Restaurant. Lola had fried Cod, N had seafood pasta, B had halibut cakes, and Aa had a club sandwich.  The food was delicious, with most of us not finishing.... except for AA because he ordered off the lunch menu.

Our last leg of the journey was through large patches of fog, with it clearing as we entered Gros Morne National Park.  Since it cleared we decided to stop at Lobster Cove Lighthouse for a sunset photo. It was an excellent choice.  With a short drive from their to the Gros Morne Cabins we found our Orange Cabin and put up our feet!  We had a great day....and saw some wildlife today!

We saw 6 moose today!
2 at L'anse Meadows

2 on Hwy 430 on our way to Flower cover (Lola spotted them from quite far away, and they were standing on the road)

and 2 on the side of Hwy 430 just south of River of Ponds (in the ditch, but Lola slowed down as she was worried they were going to approach the road).

We also saw a few Rabbits and birds along the road, and a Rabbit at the Lobster Cove Lighthouse.  There was also a warning that a Bear was near the lighthouse, but we didn't have the privilege of seeing it.

Back at the Cabin, we are having a snack, a few beverages and then heading to bed, as we have another full day planned for tomorrow.  AA gave N his cold... so now we have 2 people blowing their noses and coughing, even in unison sometimes.  Hope they feel better soon, and B and Lola aren't next.

Good Night Lola.
