BANG Explores Newfoundland - Day 3

B woke up at 5 am this morning to see the sunrise, as well as the fog roll in (then went back to bed), not before almost going to the wrong cabin.  When the rest of us woke up, the fog was fully rolled and you could not see the lighthouse across the way.

Breakfast was in the cabin - fruit, muffins (for G), cheese, cinnamon muffins (for NAB) and pepperoni with your choice of coffee or tea.  The car was loaded up and the crew was checked out by 8:45 and on their way to their first stop of the day - Port Au Choix.

The drive was fog-filled but there were some sections where we were able to take in the surrounding scenery.

Lola navigated the car to the restaurant (Anchor Cafe) and they arrived just before it opened at 11.  Once the sign switched over, the foursome went inside for an early lunch.  The waitress was very chatty - apparently she was on her third cup of coffee for the day while NAB were only on their second and were less chatty.  Lunch was delicious - Lola order a moose burger (without the bun) and homemade fries.  She said it was ok but couldn't quite figure out what it tasted like.  B had cod and fries, N had a club sandwich (AA was jealous) and AA had a fish burger and fries.

After the waitress cleared dishes, she was chatting with B about Cod Tongues which he tried earlier and wasn't a huge fan of the texture (very chewy).  The waitress said that was likely because the Cod Tongues were fresh and that they are much better after they have been frozen.  B is now ready to try again and will continue to search out his next opportunity.

With the bill paid, BANG made their way to the Point Riche Lighthouse which was a 5 mins drive from the restaurant.  It was still foggy outside but still a pretty impressive site.

Then, it was another 2 hr drive up and across the peninsula to visit B's friend Raymond and his parents who have a house in Englee.  The drive went by relatively quickly with many bumps along the paved road.

In Englee, we met up with Ray who took us to his parents place.  From there, we went on a boat with him and his dad, Ray, out into the Englee Bay to see the iceberg that Ray Sr had brought in for us (:P) and then to do some Cod fishing.

We had a great time out on the water for a couple hours.  AA was the only person to land something during fishing - a rock.  The iceberg ice was very cold and pure - AA and Lola were curious how many thousands of years old the ice was.  B succeeded in getting his fishing line wrapped around the boat motor (amateur).  Lola enjoyed the sun in the front of the boat and N was the first one to get splashed.

The Rays did a great job showing us around the area and teaching us the history of the boat yard and the fishing regulations.

Once back at the homestead, we enjoyed a home-cooked meal of Cod, potatoes and salad before saying our goodbyes and making our way north to our next cabin rental at St. Lunaire Griquet - another 2 hrs drive.  This time, the drive was supported by a quick Robins Donuts stop to get breakfast for tomorrow morning along with some roadies (three coffees and a tea).

Along the way, N spotted two moose while B tried to recall if a female moose had antlers (they don't).  After another 2 hrs drive, the journey ended at the cabins just north of St. Lunair Griquet and about 8 kms south of tomorrow's destination - L'Anse Aux Meadows.

After checking in and unloading the car, the crew went for a quick walk to stretch their legs and then a short 2 mins drive back into town to take some pictures of the nearby islands and shore housing - very picturesque.

Tomorrow should be more exploring (read - "walking") in the morning followed by a longer drive back towards Rocky Harbour for another stay in the cabin.  Hopefully we can get this blog to post tonight or else early tomorrow morning so our loyal blog readers remain informed.

PS - Lola thought it was appropriate to throw AA's glasses in the garbage at the end of the night:
