Hawaii, Jan 8 2023 - Day 5

Today was our last day on the Big Island and we were looking to make the most of it.  We started with breakfast at the hotel again before packing up and going on a short day trip to the Spencer Beach Park in the morning.

Turtles in the lagoon

The beach was great!  Not very busy and some nice shaded areas.  We did a little bit of snorkelling but couldn't see much since the sand was making the water cloudy near the coral.

As we were packing up, we could see two whales breaching in the distance.  We stayed and watched for at least 10 mins, the whales were quite entertaining.

"Thar she blows!"

It was a short drive to lunch at Seafood Bar and Grill where we both had Mahi Mahi.  Lunch was delicious, probably the best lunch we have had so far.  The view was "meh" but clearly there is some bad blood between the restaurant and the shipping yard across the highway since the restaurant has some merch which says "Tanks alot".  Very clever.

Our server at lunch was a nice lady named Danna.  She was excited to learn that we were from Canada and was surprised when we knew where Saskatchewan was (that was where her mom was from).  After lunch, we drove back to the hotel to exchange our bags and get ready for our whale watching cruise.

It was a short drive to the boat so we decided we would kill some time enjoying the sun (and shade) on the beach.  Check in for the cruise was at 1:30 and promptly at 1:31, AA got a call from the cruise captain asking if they were on their way.  We could see boat and the captain talking on his phone, it was funny.

It is always enjoyable to get out on the water.  We saw two whales, one of which was quite close to the boat and gave a show:

Once back on shore, we decided to stay and enjoy the water and beach some more.

As the sun went behind the clouds, it was time to go back to the hotel to shower and get ready for supper at Foster's Kitchen at Kings Shops, a 2 mins drive from the hotel.  Before supper, we walked around the shops at Kings Shops and at Queen's Marketplace.  Lola bought a new t-shirt from Cariloha to add to her collection.

Supper was very good - AA had a huge two pork chop meal and Lola had a smaller grilled fish meal.  Luckily, Lola saved room for some dessert (Dole Whip) from one of the ice cream shops in Queen's Marketplace.  She was pretty excited.

Once back at the hotel, AA and Lola sat out on their lanai to watch and listen to the end of the luau fire show.

After packing their bags,  it was time for one more visit to Buddha point to listen to the waves and stargaze before they leave the island for Kauai.

The Big Island is always so enjoyable, there are so many different experiences - beaches, volcanoes and rainforest.  We can't wait to come back!
