Hawaii, Jan 10 2023 - Day 7

This morning, we were graciously woken up by roosters crowing at 5:30.  Well, it actually started at 2:30 when one rooster was clearly mistaken on the time of day.  AA decided that it was time to get up at 7:15.  Lola toughed it out a little longer, when the chickens were much more calm and got up at 8:30.

After a quick breakfast at the condo, it was time to pack up and go for a 4.5km hike to see Hanelei Bay from one of the mountains nearby.  It was a short drive, only about 5 mins, and the hike was a great 1hr 45mins.  The view from the peak were spectacular!

The final view point

A small snack and we were back on our way down to the car to head back to the condo for lunch.  Along the way, Lola was able to get some pictures of the Nene (Hawaiian Goose).

A short refuelling stop at the condo and we were back out to get in some beach time.

We heard that the surf was going to get pretty big later in the day so we decided to go to the east side of the island, where the surf wasn't expected to be too dangerous.  The first beach stop was at Anahola Beach.

Google took us to a small parking lot that opened up onto the beach and you could drive your vehicle to your favourite spot.  AA didn't test the Malibu's off-roading capabilities so instead we walked to each side of the beach.

Next, we went to Secret Beach which got its name from the fact that you need to hike about 0.5km down to the beach.  It was quite a hike down - AA did the walk in true Hawaiian style (barefoot) instead of wearing flip-flops.

The beach was not very crowded (not too surprising) and the views were pretty great.

Then, it was time for supper at Kilauea Fish Market and it was delicious.

After a short shopping trip at the Kilauea Market, we took an equally short drive to the Kilauea Lighthouse to see if we could see any of the sunset (no) before heading back to the condo to relax after a busy day.
