Germany 2019 - Day 6

Today AA decided it would be a good idea to use public transportation instead of using the car, or walking.  It was a great idea, and Lola sure loves subways.  We had a map, and researched last night what kind of ticket to get, why not the group day ticket since it was cheaper than 2 day tickets.  It is good for up to 5 adults, or 10 children under 14 or something like that.  It is an "honour" system, so you buy the ticket, but don't actually use it unless asked to see the ticket.

After breakfast  AA took Lola for an elevator ride to see the pamphlet station.  And wow Lola was excited to get a whole bunch of little business card sized information cards on places they wanted to go see today.  They even had a little piece of information on them about the place that she could read and inform AA as they visited.  There were a lot, but they were up for the challenge.

We headed to the station that was a few blocks from the hotel.  After map looking, brief discussion, we headed to platform 2 where we got on a Train? or was it a Subway?  We don't really know as it was half above ground, then we got off underground.  We got off 2 stops from where we started, and headed to Marienplatz, located in the heart of the city.  It is a big square where a market used to be but got moved as it outgrew the space.  The New Town Hall towers the one side of the Plaza.  Lola loved how they had fresh flowers along the balconies.  It is very beautiful. There area also other gateways, and St Peter's Church.  We also went in the inside courtyard, which had a cool sprial ramp, and doors to enter different places. It was very cool.

Kids on a trip, loved their safety vests!
Inside the courtyard

Next we headed a few blocks to Viktualienmarkt (Victuals Market) which was moved from Marieplatz with over 140 stands now of all sorts of meats, cheese, fruit and veggies stands, crafts, wine, honey, plants and don't forget the olives.  There was also a cool May pole there, which we remember seeing on our 2008 tour of Europe in many cities we went through.

Next up AA lead us to what he thought was Frauenkirche, but was mistaken, but there was a mix of modern and old architecture.

Up next, find Lola a water closet.... Public washrooms exist here, you just usually have to pay.... McDonalds was no exception.  They at least are nice and clean.

Once Lola felt better they headed to Residenz (royal residence).  It is the biggest inner-city palace in Germany.  Here there was also a big plaza with a statue of Maximillan I in the center.  Many Buildings surrounded the statue including a the Opera House (looked very Roman) and the national theater.

A walk through the streets of Munich to get to our next card, Odeonsplatz, which resembles Italy.  It is a replica of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.  Very cool to see a yellow church.  Here there was also a big open plaza for people to gather.  On one side the side of the Residenz and on the other a large structure that houses the 19th century, It monument to the Bavarian army and the site of Hitlers 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.  Lola liked the big lions! In this square there were also fancy car dealerships, AA said we weren't dressed fancy enough to go into the Maserati Dealership.

Up next we went for lunch at the Hofbrauhaus.  AA had been there before, so he knew how to sit down at any table and wait for them to ask you how big of a beer you wanted.  There was also live music and great food.  The hall is big enough to house 3500 guests.  Lola had her sausage and AA had his beer and pretzel accompanied by pumpkin soup.

We then walked to go up the tower of St Peter Church, 3 Euros, 306 steps, 56m off the ground.  The steps were both brick and wood, with the up being the same as the down.  It was worth every cent.  The views were spectacular, and neat to see others in New City Hall Tower almost at the same elevation.

AA really wanted to see Frauenkirche, a gothic style church with 2 domes (known as onion towers).  We finally knew where it was from seeing it from up top the tower, so walking there this time was easier, even though Lola questions AA on where they were going.  A little disappointed that one of the domes was completely covered with scaffolding, so the view we got from the tower was the best we got.  It was pretty much destroyed during WWII but rebuilt, completed in 1994.  It had cool "markers" on the sides, not sure what they are.

We headed back to the subway to give our feet a little break and head to the English Garden.  It is a large park that we described as the "central park" of Munich.  We walked around, ate a snack, and Lola found the water closet to use for a charge at the side of the 2nd largest beer garden in Munich, with 7000 seats.  In the park there is water that runs through it (we don't know where it comes from) a good monument on a hill (giving you a good view), as well as a Chinese Turm in the beer garden.  We walked through for a while, and then headed back to the Subway to make our way back to the hotel.

Back at the stop by our hotel, AA found a grocery store near, where we got a few snacks for $1.81 Euros, which was less than Lola paid to use the public washrooms all day....

At the hotel, AA had to take a call for work, and do some work.  Lola caught up on social media, ate the snack and started to blog. He didn't quite finish his call before we had to head to supper (reservation at Hard Rock), so he took the call with him into the elevator.

Back on the public transportation we headed to Hard Rock Cafe near Marienplatz.  Food was good, Lola decided to get a fancy drink as water was only about 1 euro cheaper.  AA had to take another phone call for work.  We both had chicken and AA had a beer of course, and we had to get our souvenir glass, AA and Lola tried to figure out how many glasses they had, and if they had any from Europe before.... Guess that will have to wait till we get home to check it out.

We walked back to the station taking a few cool photos of New Town Hall in the dark.

Lola and AA arrived back at the hotel, just in time for AA to take another phone call.  Before AA left he sent an article to Lola regarding Travelling for Business and how it is referred to as Bleisure.... We are sure experiencing that this trip mixing business with Leisure and Pleasure travel.

Tomorrow we have a few more cards to finish, and we will for sure be taking public transportation as it makes it so easy and less stressful.

The weather today was supposed to be 20 but we don't think it got that warm, AA still wore shorts, and was comfortable.

Time to stretch these calves out, they are so tight from all the walking up stairs, hills and just the general elevation changes.

Later, Lola.
