Germany 2019 - Day 5

Today AA didn't have to get up and get to work, so one of us slept till 8:30am this morning while the other was up at 7:17am  and on his laptop.

When AA woke up Lola he opened up the blinds to a disappointing view of fog out the window.  Therefore our plan to go up the spire of the Munster Ulm wouldn't really work.  So we got ready for the day, and headed down for breakfast.

Breakfast was the same food as every other day, but this time Lola brought a hole bottle of water as she was still pretty thirsty, and the glasses were small. AA had a pretzel as dessert, as they weren't out at the beginning.

We packed up our bags and checked out.  Off to a castle that AA visited the last time he was in Germany.  He couldn't wait to show Lola, as well as take photos with his camera (last time he just had a phone).  The drive was pretty uneventful, and went pretty quickly. The drive was foggy until all of a sudden we got out of the clouds and the sun was shining, and then we could see the Alps!

We arrived in Hohenschwangau, used the water closet and then headed for tickets to see inside the castle (which AA didn't do last time).  The earliest tour time was 1:50 (and it was noon), so AA convinced Lola she needed some food before we headed up to the castle.  Thankful, she got French Fries and AA got himself a 0.5L beer (same price as the small one 0.3L).

The trek up the hill was steep, and not easy for Lola, but she made it.  AA didn't really let her know how you get up to the top, etc, as she would have worn more athletic clothing and maybe decided to leave her jacket at the bottom if she knew.  But anyways, everyone survived.  The walk says it should take 40 minutes (no distance markers just time), but it only took Lola and AA 20 minutes.

At the top they walked around the castle, Schloss Neuschwanstien, taking photos from all angles.  This castle has inspired poems, operas and even Disney Movies, as well as explained as a Harry Potter-esque Castle, dotted with the alpine lakes and thick fir trees. The walk around the outside was also a lot of ups and downs.

Eventually we made our way to AA's favorite view, from the bridge.  This bridge was full of people and AA didn't understand why people pile at the beginning until, Lola and AA made there way to the other side, and Lola had an uneasy feeling as the timber bottom flexed.  The 40m drop also may have had something to do with it.  But she was brave took some photos and made their way back to the beginning.  At the beginning of the bridge there is also a people counter to say how many more people can go on..... 127 more... wow you can put a lot of people on this bridge.

We made out way back to the front of the castle to go on our tour.  In the inside you were not allow cellphones, cameras, backpacks on your back or pets.  The castle inside was amazing.   This is an image from the internet as you were not allowed to take photos.

Every room was like above, wall to ceiling paintings, crown like fixtures, and lots of detail in the furniture.  The castle began being built in 1869 and had so much advance technology, including, central heating system, a telephone, a servant calling system that would tell the servant what room the King was calling from as well as light with a battery in one room.  Lola's favorite room was as you walked into a cave like room, and off to the side was a "winter garden" that was an enclosed balcony with pebbles like a Zen garden on the floor and plants with a beautiful view of the village down below.

After the tour we headed down to hike to get to the bottom of the waterfall to see the bridge from down below.  This was an amazing way to get down, and the smells of the trees, the fresh water coming down the hill, and the nature was absolutely breath taking.  Lola was so happy they took this way down, just wished she had hiking clothes on, not jeans.

This bridge was anchored to the rock face, very cool!

Back at the car, we headed for "AA's" surprise of the day. Who would have thought that this would take over 2.5 hours to get there, when google says it should only at 1 hour 11 minutes to go 79kms.

The highway was closed that we were going to go on, but the signage was not very clear, so after dodging the "closed" barricades at a few intersections AA and Lola decided they should not continue and turned off.  It still didn't go well as at one point they were going the wrong way, and had to turn around, and eventually made their way through a construction site where the road was closed.  Eventually looking up "detour" in German, oh yes, that is what that sign said.... and we had to go around the town.  But not to worry, while AA was stressfully driving on very narrow roads, with trees and posts on the sides, Lola tried to keep it light, by looking for "modern" looking homes for her mom as well as loving the country side.  The highlight would be the cows "walking home" into the barn door that was right on the side of the road.  The cows were in amongst the cars and causing a traffic jam.

Some modern homes

The narrow roads:

The road AA drove on, then had to turn around, clearly it is closed...

And the cows going home:

Oh lets not forget about the traffic accident that also delayed us when we finally felt like we were getting somewhere.  We were stopped on the highway, where we could see in the distance a fire truck, ambulance and police as well as 2 tow trucks at the T intersection.  Lola looked to see if they could turn around, but no, that was the only way to where they needed to go.  Through all the little towns they had speed signs, if you were blow the speed limit it would give you a happy face, going too fast, sad face... They were amazing, but never got a photo.

Finally they made it to Andech where they went to an old monastery that was still a church as well as a brewery, Andech's.  We walked around for a little bit checking out the site.  It is pretty neat, and Lola loved the fancy fence for the sheep.

a cool sundial on the face of the church

Headed to the Biergarten Andechs for some food!  It was a long day with only really a breakfast, and a few snacks along the way.  We shared sausage, potato salad, coleslaw and had some pickles, oh and don't forget AA had a beer and pretzel!  The food was great, and what an atmosphere with the stein lockers.

the lockers!

We made our way to Munich (now in the dark) but at least these highways all had lines painted in the middle, and eventually turned into the Autobahn, which AA was pretty excited to drive fast, but not as fast as he did in the light.  We arrived at what we thought was our hotel, parked, unpacked out bags, and went to the front desk to find out it wasn't the correct hotel....

"back in the hotel to go to the correct hotel"

Back in the car, and off to the real hotel AA booked.  Arrived with no issues, checked in, then had to park.  We got the car into the parkade, but couldn't find the hotel entrance, eventually buzzed and they let us in these doors.  Up the elevator to the 4th floor to find the numbers in the thousands, and our card is in the hundreds.....  Maybe the guy missed a digit... no tried a door, didn't work. back down the Elevator we went.

Wrong connected hotel, we eventually got to the right elevator, and to our room.  Oh wait AA had to take a work call in the middle of all of that, so when we got to the room, he had to go make sure our car was parked int he right spot (nope, had to move it), and got up the right elevator then proceeded to work for 2 hours while Lola Blogged.

It was an eventful day, you can tell by how long the blog is...Now time for bed, and hopefully we have a less eventful but satisfying day tomorrow.

Lola.
