Well today started a lot like the other days, AA went to work and Lola slept in. This time she slept till 11am when she could hear the housekeeping knocking on other doors to make sure people weren't in their rooms.
Lola and then tried to decide what to do today, she was hoping the 60-70% chance of rain would have changed, but it didn't, it was coming.
finally ready for the day! |
So she put on her rain jacket, and headed out to see the Mahnmal St Nikolai (war memorial). It was raining quite a bit, but still enjoyed it. The actual church was air raded in 1943, and never rebuilt. The tower is the only thing that is left.
Lola went into the museum in the basement, where she learnt about the history of the church, as well as the WWII from a German Perspective. The stain glass was really neat, and the museum was small but very well put together, and nice that there was German and English.
After wondering around (and staying dry), Lola headed up the tower, this time the only option was an elevator. It is only 75m tall, but neat "automation" in the elevator to tell you how hight you are going. At the top she saw some views and tried to stay dry, but it was still raining quite a bit. She saw the Unesco site she has been waiting to go with AA to see, and some of the other buildings around. The City views were pretty good. And interesting enough the lift was sponsered by McDonalds (that was surprising).

Back down she headed to her favorite Gluten Free Cafe, Isabella. This time she had a salami sandwich and a cinnamon bun (that she wanted the day before but they didn't have any). The food was very good, the sandwich was warmed up and had pickled hot peppers that gave it a little zing. It was also nice to be out of the rain.
After lunch (at 2:00pm), she was trying to figure out what else to do. AA was coming back to the hotel for meetings, so she decided she should try and stay away (she was going to go to the pool and sauna, but changed her mind), so she went back to the hotel to drop off her backpack and headed on the subway to Hamburger Kunsthalle (the art museum).
Highlights
- building architecture (so many different areas that looked so different)
- so much art (some of her favorites from the day)
- Lola realized she likes surrealism art
- the measeum had over 145,000 pieces of art
-some of the art was installed at the museum like the 13 tons of lead that was splattered on the floor.
the lead piece |
This was titled "The Dream of 12 February 1930" |
Salvador Dali "Soft Construction with Boiled Beans" |
It took her till 5 pm to make it through the whole thing, and Lola headed back in the rain back to the subway to meet AA for supper.
He found a "traditional german" resturant for some sausage and wienerschnitzel. The food was really good especially the potatoes.
Adam taking a work call.... |
After supper Lola took AA on a little tour at the lake, and town hall, then back to the hotel to get his camera.
We thought it wasn't going to rain as much, but we were wrong, a wet walk to the St Michael's Church to enjoy the night views from the top of the tower. Yes this is the same tower as Lola went earlier during the day. We took the lift this time (much easier than all those stairs).
It was pretty rainy at the top but the views were pretty neat. The blue lights supposedly are going on until Sunday (according to the very chatty guy selling us our tickets). He also gave us a discount because were were from Canada, 2 euros off each :).
Finally can show people how short the "tunnel" was. |
festival going on. |
We also enjoyed the night activities, of self serve drinks and listening to the trumpeter that plays out the window.
Once we heard the trumpet play, we headed back to the hotel.
Lola blogged while AA pretty much fell asleep.
Lola is going to set an alarm for tomorrow, so hopefully she can enjoy the whole sunny day.
