Friday - today is Friday. We've all lost track of the day of the week, surely a sign of a good vacation.
Today we went to Culloden Battle Fields, to see where the last battle on British soil was held. T and DD were in their element.
It was a short drive to the Battle Field. We had a guided tour at 10am which taught us a bunch of the history of the battle field, the reason for the fight and the fall out. None of us really knew the history from 1746 where the Jacobites fought the "Government". Our tour guide, Scott, was great - he was a really good story teller and was very informative. T got to ask a question at the end of the tour, asking if there was a cairn for the MacDonald clan. Scott told us where to go and we did, eventually finding the marker. B and MBM were very excited to find some Highland Coos on the walk around the grounds.
Back inside the museum, Lola and B decided to go to the cafe and enjoy some tea while the others went back through the various displays and artifacts. AA did a quick lap through the museum, realizing he didn't need to read all the displays to learn the same history that Scott told everyone. The others took their time going through the museum and learning more history, reading about the two different sides of the battle.
After T and DD had their fill of war history, we spent some time (and British pounds) in the gift shop. T got a hoodie and looked just like the mannequin.
It was a short drive to lunch - 3 mins in the car. Everyone had soup - two with roasted red pepper and tomato soup and the others with the "Cullen Skink" (a fish chowder). The BR's shared two different burger plates - one beef, one halloumi. Lola added some fries and AA added a salad for his. Everyone enjoyed their meals (it was unclear if Lola enjoyed hers, she was not feeling the best).
Next up was another short drive to the Clava Cairns, to see the rock displays dating back 4000 years. It's incredible that they are still in existence.
After a short walk to the edge of a farmer's field, we could see the largest masonry viaduct in the UK - the Nairn Viaduct. It was a tremendous sight to behold. And we timed it such that we could see a train crossing the bridge.
After seeing the sites near Culloden, it was time to return to Inverness so that Lola could have a nap. DD took the opportunity to also nap while the kids played video games.
We had dinner reservations at Blackfriars which was a short walk from the house. Lola was excited to walk across the pedestrian bridge over the River Ness.
Supper was very good. AA and B had the Chicken Milanese. T and MBM had the steak and ale pie. Lola had rib steak and DD had seafood linguine. Everyone enjoyed their meal except DD - he always orders seafood pasta and never seems to fully enjoy it.
B and T both got desserts - B had her favourite (creme brulee) and T had sticky toffee pudding. DD and AA both had dessert beers.
After everyone's bellies were full, it was time to walk back to the house with a short stop on the bridge to admire the Inverness Castle that was illuminated at night.
Back at the house, the kids got ready for bed quickly so that we could play a couple rounds of Towerfall before calling it a night. Tomorrow is another travel day as we need to check out of our rental and make our way to Glasgow. AA has a couple stops along the way to breakup the 3.5 hrs drive.
