Hawaii 2025 - Day 5 (Big Island to Maui)

Today we are island hoping! But first we had to have one last swim with the Turtles in the fresh water lagoon. So we actually set an alarm this morning to make sure we had enough time before our flight.

We got up at about 6:45am to head for breakfast.  We enjoyed our last Island breakfast, AA having an omelette and Lola having 2 eggs over easy with gluten free toast!  Plus the bacon, white rice, miso soup, salad and fruit (Lola even tried the Lychee).  We sat by the window again enjoying the view.

Once we ate, we headed around the Lagoon to find a spot to go snorkelling for the last time before leaving the resort.  It was exciting as we could see the fish before even getting in the water as we walked around.  We stopped to say hi to the dolphins too.

We got our snorkels on and headed into the water, it was much calmer at the Lagoon early in the morning. Into the water, and right away followed a sea turtle.  It was amazing.  We followed it and it lead us towards the waterfall where there were at least 4 turtles and tons of fish eating the sea weed.  It was hard to swim through it all, but we did it for the view. It was amazing, at one point we thought a turtle was going to nip at AA he was heading right for him, but nothing happened.

We got out of the water with a high from the fish and turtles we saw. We dried off (AA took a work call) and let the sun dry our swim suits a little and headed back to our hotel to pack up and clean up to head to the airport.

Bitter sweet to leave, but at least we knew we weren't going home :). Filled up with gas and headed to the airport, AA dropped Lola off with the bags, and went and returned the car.

We boarded our flight and got ready for the up and down to get to Maui. 30 minute flight with a quick swig of juice during flight and we landed.

We got to the baggage carousel and oversized to find out Lola's golf bag didn't even make it on the plane.  So Lola dealt with that, as her golf bag was on its way to Honolulu and then to Maui this afternoon. They said they would deliver it within 6 hours.... good thing we didn't have a tee time booked.

We got to our rental car by taking a trolly, to a new facility that wasn't there when we were in 2017 (the last time we were in Maui).  We got into our car, and headed to Whole Foods for some breakfast food and snacks. We stopped on the way for some McDonalds, to find out it was drive thru only, so we ate in the parking lot of whole foods.

We got our groceries and headed to the hotel.  The drive was as we remembered, with the tunnel, the view of the beaches and ocean, and then we get to Lahaina (that burned a few years ago),  Roads are closed, and everything is pretty much flattened and cleaned up.  Houses are starting to be rebuilt, but you aren't allowed to drive down Front Street like we used to.

We made it to our pink hotel (reminds me of the pink hotel on Waikiki beach, but it isn't. They didn't have the king size bed room available we booked, so we got a room with 2 double beds, but a partial ocean view. They said we could move tomorrow, but we decided to stay to see the ocean!
Once settled in, we relaxed on the small balcony watching the water and the End of the Winnipeg Jets Game.  Interesting fact, it was on Amazon Prime.  It would let me watch it on the US phone data, but not on the wifi.... not sure how that works, but good thing I have a great USA/Canada plan, and so much data to spare!  Great OT win, and happy we got to watch it on my phone.

We headed for a 30 minute walk down the boardwalk that parallels the beach to go for supper. By the time we got there, there was a 20 minute wait, but we didn't mind, we walked a very short distance to the water, and sat watching the sunset, whales and boats.

We ate at Castaway Cafe, we got seated outside which was so nice, but the service was a little slow.  It was like the night before where they were so thankful we were patient.  Lola had the fresh fish, with coconut sauce, white rice and veggies, it was so good!  Way better than last nights fish. AA had Kalua Pork and Cabbage, with Mac Salad.  He also really enjoyed the meal. What a great pick!  We walked back to our hotel, but this time down the boardwalk, which was dark at times.

Once back a the hotel, we pretty much got ready for bed, as we have an early morning tomorrow.
