Japan 2024 - Bullet Train to Kyoto, Higashi Hongan-ji Temple (June 5)

Today we travel again by bullet train to Kyoto, it is about half way between Tokyo and Hiroshima, but first we had breakfast at the hotel again (same one as the day before we didn’t venture to the all Japanese one).

After breakfast we wanted to go visit the light house that was on the island we were staying right out side the Grand Prince Hotel.  We walked around looking at the earth museum plaques and and headed up some stairs to the light house.  A little disappointed we couldn’t really see the light house at the top as a very large tree was covering most of it. Once back at the hotel we checked out the G7 summit table, and then took a photo just like the politicians.  They even had a tripod to put your phone on to take the group shot.

Back down we went and back to the room to finish packing up.  We made some paper cranes in the lobby, and that is when the book reading started.  T started reading the complete story of Sadako Saskatoon and the Thousand Paper Cranes that MBMell bought at the gift store in the hotel room, and lobby and it never stopped.  B decided to start reading over his shoulder.

We boarded the bus and the kids wanted to sit together to continue reading. Once at Hiroshima station, we found food, drinks and made our way to the waiting area.  IN the waiting area the kids continued to read. MBMell and Lola found a beef box, and decided they should also have that (no regrets). AA got us on an earlier bullet train than originally booked as we could get into our Airbnb earlier as well.  It was turning out perfect.

Boarded the train, and MBMell, Lola, and AA began to eat their food, while the others decided to play video games instead. Eventually they ate, but after the others were already done.  The kids were excited to try their milky juice on the train.  AA enjoyed the sausage in a pastry and a pastrami sandwich.  Lola also had tuna maki after her beef box.

The ride felt pretty short at only 2 hours long. Once off we walked the 10 minutes to the Airbnb that AA had found for us.  It is a pretty nice space, with 2 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, and 2 beds on the main level with the living room and kitchenette and bathroom, as well as a washing machine.  Lola and AA chose to sleep on the main level, as it was better for the other family to be together upstairs.

Once we got rid of our luggage, we notice we were right by Temple, so we put our shoes back on and made our way there, an approximately 500m walk.

The temple was large, and we had to take our shoes off.  There were different areas to see, as well as stamps!.  One of the more interesting part is there was a rope made of woman’s hair as the other ropes broke when trying to built the temple, so they decided adding human hair would add to the strength. This temple was full of a lot of gold leave, and was very fancy looking inside and out.

We headed back to the Airbnb to freshen up for supper and decided on an Italian place, called Centro, just down the street.  We didn’t want a disaster like the night before so we just picked a place and went. The book reading together continued until the book was completed. All 148 pages today.

It was nice to have a change in food.  Most of the group had a type of pasta, while Lola had steak and fries, and T had pizza.  We all enjoyed our meals!

After supper B gave DD a massage, as we are all feeling a little old, then we played some Tower Fall and ate a maple leaf stuffed dessert that MBMell purchased at the Hiroshima Station. Everyone enjoyed the flavours except for MBMell who didn’t really like the pineapple she has chosen for her self.  DD had Lemon, B had Chocolate, AA had cream cheese which we think was custard, and T had a melt down about unfair teams, so didn’t eat his strawberry one.

Kids went to bed, and the adults played Overcooked and drank beverages and tried a new flavour of chips.  No one liked these…they sure smelled fishy…turns out they have Mackerel power in them.

We are excited to be in a new City.  It seems very old compared to all the other places we have been so far, but still great charm and such friendly people.  Japan also feels very clean, and safe.
