Hawaii - Jan 29, 2026 - Day 6 - Waimea Canyon

Sorry for the delay in posting, but we have been playing hard, and sleeping harder.  Also, I typically blog while AA is falling asleep, and 2 things, there is no internet in the bedroom, and I have been falling asleep early too.

Today we got up had breakfast at our place, Lola is happy to have VANs Gluten free waffles. (she misses them in Canada, making her own just isn't the same...maybe less sugar).

We hit the road a little later than we had planned but still got out at 8:15am. It was a longer drive than Lola thought it would be, but enjoyed the scenic views along the ocean, and tried not to get car sick going up the windy road to the Canyon. The Canyon Road was closed for construction so we had to take an alternative route, which was still paved and still windy.

Since we had done the Canyon Trail only a few years ago, we decided to try the Black Pipe Trail.  We thought there would be a pipe at the end... but there wasn't. The hike was challenging for these prairie legs, and in some spots a little narrow with a steep cliff beside you, but we made it.  We only got lost 1 time, but Lola made sure to turn around and found the red ball hanging in a tree, that helped up navigate back to the right trail.  We met one older man from Rochester NY on our way along the trail, and he passed us and made it to the "end" of the trail before we did (as we got a little lost).  We had a little chat, he said how there are lot less Canadians than normal, but he understood why and we went on our way back to the car.  Lola also accidentally had the go pro on in her backpack, so you can hear about an 1 hour of our hike, lots of heavy breathing, and discussing where to go when we got lost.

We came from the dead end sign... unexpectedly.

We hiked 5.04kms, it took us 1hour 49 minutes, total ascent was 230m and the total descent was 213m.

We got back to the car, and headed up the hill to have our lunch at Kalalau Lookout (same place we ate our lunch last time we were here).  There was road construction on our way up, which was fascinating to Lola, as she couldn't believe the mill was up there on such a narrow road (keeping one lane open), and it was trying navigate lower its boom, to not take out the trees.  They were being pretty resourceful, milling into a truck, sweeping, putting down grid and fabric for stability, and then placing and packing the millings back in place to reopen the road.  We are wondering if they are going to pave overtop after they are done, and how they truck the asphalt up there.

We looked around this look out then made our way down the hill, stopping at the other look outs on our way. The views were spectacular. The canyon measures 13 miles in length aboug 1.5 miles wide and up to 2500 feet in depth.

Canyon Viewpoint and Waimea Canyon Lookout.

We made our way down the windy road, and headed to Hanapepe the inspiration town of Lilo and Stitch.  It was pretty cool, murals, cut outs, and lots of Lilo and Stitch Merchandise.  It did remind you of the movie especially the houses on the hill, and all the flowers along the cliffs.   We walked around a little, then headed back to the car to make our way back to Poipu.

We decided we were going to walk to Kalapaki Joes (like a 2 minute walk from our place), for supper, but when we got there at 4:30 it was 1.0 hour wait, so walked back to the car, and headed to a neighbouring hotel restaurant Holoholo Grill (only a 4 minute drive).  It was right by their pool of the Sheraton, but the food was great, and they had a guy singing some hawaiian tunes. We had Ahi Sashimi as an appetizer and Lola had the Catch of the day, and AA had a waygu burger and Frings (onion rings and french fries combo).

Lola drove back to their place, and we headed to the beach for sunsets and turtles.  Unfortunately we were a little late for the sunset and saw it as we were walking the 10 minutes to the beach, but still enjoyed watching the turtles arrive at Poipu beach.  We sat there for an hour watching the turtles come in 3-4 at a time, it is so amazing.

After the turtle watching, we headed back to the house to go in the hot tub and pool.  It felt good on our tired muscles from the hiking.

The weather at the canyon was so clear which is pretty rare (but you must go in the morning before the clouds roll in).  The temperature was about 17-20 up at the canyon, compared to about 26-28 down at the beach.

It was an early night, in bed by 9 pm, but what an amazing day.
